Oakville’s Shell Park is more than just a popular destination for local gardening enthusiasts. Thanks to the creative efforts of the town’s horticulture staff, it’s now home to an award-winning garden recently recognized by a North American landscape design competition.

The design competition was held by All-America Selections (AAS), an independent, non-profit organization that donates and tests new garden seed varieties. Shell Park received second place in the category of display gardens attracting 10,001-100,000 visitors per year.

“The town’s horticulture staff put a lot of hard work and creativity into designing the Shell Park garden and we’re very proud and thrilled to see their efforts receive this recognition,” said Chris Mark, director of the Parks and Open Space department.

To reflect the competition’s theme of “pollinator education,” horticulture staff created a garden that came to life with birds, bees, and butterflies. All participating gardens were required to incorporate AAS winners – new varieties of flowers that have proved their superior garden performance across North America. Shell Park’s garden included pollinator-friendly AAS winning plants such as Leucanthemum, Heptanthemum, Rudbeckia, and Buddelia, and by using all recycled materials, staff were able to add an insect nesting area which became home to many different insects and a place for bee larvae to hatch.

Gardens were judged on their overall attractiveness, creativity of design, promotion to local media and visitors, quality of photos and the quantity of AAS winning plants incorporated into the design.
