Out of Line

21 June – 5 September 2015

Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens & at Centennial Square

Having long since shed its status as a marginal or preparatory practice, the medium of drawing has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent decades. Now seen widely as a vital art form in its own right, drawing offers countless artists the means to document their worlds, describe their imaginations and detail the abstract.

Out of Line brings together recent works by more than thirty contemporary artists from across Canada. Encompassing a broad array of styles and methods—from figurative works on paper to abstract sculptural pieces—the artworks assembled in the exhibition assess the impressively diverse and ambitious ways in which drawing practices are taking shape at the present moment across the country. With approaches both intimate and grand, traditional and novel, political and autobiographical, these works demonstrate drawing's remarkable capacity to depict contemporary life.
