Sheridan alumna Stephanie Gorin has received the 2014 Prime Time Creative Arts Emmy® Award for Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special for the series Fargo.
The 1981 graduate of Sheridan’s Media Arts-Music Theatre program (now Bachelor of Music Theatre-Performance) was part of a three-person team recognized for work on the series which airs on the FX Network. The award was presented at a ceremony in Los Angeles on August 16.
This is Gorin’s third Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Casting category, having been nominated in 2008 and 2009 for The Tudors. She was also nominated for three Gemini Awards (now the Canadian Screen Awards) for Being Erica and The Border (both 2009), as well as Guns (2010). A three-time Canadian Comedy Award nominee for the web series The Casting Room, Gorin won the award in 2012.
Given her enviable track record, Gorin can count many highlights over her career, however receiving an Emmy Award ranks high on her list. “Winning the Emmy was an unbelievable experience,” Gorin said. “Having our names up on the screen, walking up to the stage which was filled with so much talent was a dream come true.”
When asked what accounted for the Emmy win this time around, Gorin said, “I believe we won because the cast of Fargo was not only talented but very unusual. There were many new faces and a team of professionals who garnered 18 Emmy nominations this year.”
As head of her own casting company for the past 25 years, Gorin has played a pivotal role in the careers of many performers, both stage and screen. Her theatre casting credits include many of Toronto’s major musical productions spanning over two decades, including Mamma Mia, Miss Saigon, The Wizard of Oz and Les Miserables (both the original 1985 production and the 2013 remount). Several of the leads she has cast have gone on to reprise their roles on Broadway.
More than 30 years in the performing industry has not dulled Gorin’s passion for it. “I love the business and I love actors. There is nothing like the joy of seeing someone get their break.”
