Thanksgiving, White or Red? Oakville's Sommelier

Both white and red wines can make wonderful pairings for your Thanksgiving dinner! Choose light to medium bodied wines to avoid overwhelming your turkey and trimmings. Rose and sparkling wines make great aperitifs, and they can also be served throughout your meal. Look for wine with mild tannins, and good acidity - means food-friendly. Here are some varietal wines from Ontario to consider for this holiday weekend:

Riesling

Hidden Bench 2011 Roman's Block Riesling: Produced with grapes from a single vineyard of old Vines, a terroir driven wine with good minerality, flavours of apples and tropical fruits.

Gewürztraminer

Between the Lines 2012 Gewürztraminer: The winery creates craft products, this white wine gives you sweet, spicy, and fruity flavours.

Pinot Gris

Angels Gate 2011 Pinot Gris: Award winning wine, dry, fruity and spicy - perfect with roast turkey.

Gamay Noir

Malivoire 2012 Gamay: You may know this varietal wine as Beaujolais. Typical flavours of black pepper and berries including raspberry, and in this case, dark Niagara cherry.

Pinot Noir

Flat Rock 2011 Estate Pinot Noir: A savoury wine with flavours of cherry and red currant. This is a terrific varietal to choose for Thanksgiving with its light to medium body, mild tannins, and juiciness that will complement your entire dinner.
