pianist
In the Main Entrance to OTMH there is shiny black grand piano. Various people come and play from a sister visiting from Manitoba playing show tunes, to this wonderful gentleman who composes original work and performs every Tuesday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. These musicians do this for free.
I was there visiting a family member who has been in the hospital for 2.5 weeks. They aren't able to get around easily, so they spend most of their days looking out the window or watching TV. Yesterday, I took some time to visit and bring them down to listen.
As we approached, after stopping off at Starbucks for a black coffee, they could hear the music. A smile went across their lips, and a twinkle in their eyes appeared. We parked the wheel chair in order to have a good view of the pianist playing, but still be able to see all the activity, coming and going. Their foot started to tap to the beat of the melody.
There was another man in a wheel chair whose son had also brought him downstairs, and as you looked around several people were listening while they waited.
Just for a little while they could forget why they were there, and enjoy a moment of normalcy. It also brought me so much joy, to see such a positive reaction.
To all the musicians, who take the time to play at OTMH. Thank you so much!
If you are interested in playing, you can call OTMH's Volunteer Department at (905) 845-2571. To find out when someone is playing you can speak to one of the volunteers at the information desk in the main entrance.
