The YMCA of Oakville is pleased to have received a $24,400 Seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). OTF’s Seed Grants support the research, development, and testing of new ideas and different approaches.
This grant was used to pilot the launch of the MyndPump program, a YMCA-developed group fitness and peer support program for young people ages 13-18 who are struggling with their mental wellness.
“The YMCA of Oakville continually demonstrates their commitment to residents by providing opportunities to more than 8,000 people,” said Stephen Crawford, MPP for Oakville.
“Today, mental health is a growing concern among youth. I am proud that the YMCA of Oakville recently received an Ontario Trillium Grant to assist young people aged 13-18 struggling with their mental health by establishing a fitness and peer group program that will build emotional and social skills. Their work is invaluable to local residents.”
This early intervention program allows participants to lead more resilient and resourceful lifestyles through developing their self-esteem, self-efficacy, improved physical and mental well-being, and a greater sense of belonging.
MyndPump supports the positive development of these assets and encourages youth to discover effective wellness strategies, empowering them through physical activity. The funds have been used to provide access and equipment to participants of the program.
As a free program, the YMCA of Oakville continues to reduce barriers to services for those in our community.
“Mental health affects how one responds to challenges, relates to others, and makes choices. Current research shows that 1 in 5 youth suffers from poor mental health in Ontario," stated CEO Kyle Barber.
"Positive mental health is associated with increased learning, pro-social behaviour, positive social relationships, improved physical health, and life expectancy.”
