Oakville Shopping: Inspiring Interior Design

Marilyn MonroeI feel I should buy shares in the lovely and stylish Marilyn Monroe Cafe in downtown Oakville.  Since its opening in December, 2012, I have been arranging to meet all my friends and business acquaintances for coffee here. Why, you ask….. For starters, it’s bright, airy with lots of windows, and the design style is definitely modern.  I love the cool grey felt chairs and comfy banquettes and the beautiful Marilyn Monroe cafecontemporary copper colour pendant style lighting.  If you haven’t paid this establishment a visit, you might want to do so.  It serves some really nice premium coffees and specialty drinks plus an assortment of baked goodies. Since there aren’t many tables, the noise level is very acceptable, and that’s an absolute plus for me. On my most recent visit, I probably picked a great time of day to meet my friend and sip my Bianca Latte as we had such a lovely time sitting and talking, without having to shout above the crowd or Muzak.  I’m sure it must get a little noisier in the morning when the office and retail shop staff stop in to either eat their breakfast or grab something to go.  As for me, I had a lovely afternoon coffee break, then ventured out to explore Oakville’s shops on the Lakeshore.

Oakville Fine HardwareAs a designer, I’m always on the lookout for new home furnishings and products that I can recommend to potential clients. Well, I stumbled on this really fabulous fine hardware store in Oakville – Oakville Fine Hardware Inc.,   – on 2-312 Lakeshore Road East.  Chip MClellan, the owner, took the time and effort to educate me on the beautiful forged bronze and brass front door and interior door, window, kitchen, and bathroom hardware he carries in the store. As I got the opportunity to browse through the showroom, it was evident that quality was the mainstay of the stores product lines. The styling, finishes, colours, and detail definitely appeal to the most discerning home owner.  If you are planning a kitchen or bathroom renovation and ‘quality’ of fittings and finishes is forefront for your project, you should visit Chip and speak to him about your hardware needs.  I am sure he will be able to recommend a line that meets with your budget.

A little further west on the Lakeshore, I noticed that House Warmings, a family run business, is having an upholstery sale.  With spring just around the corner, this would be a great opportunity to take advantage of this sale and get that sofa or chair you love so much but can’t bear to part with re-upholstered.  And, just down the road, there is Jenso Upholstering at 242 Kerr Street, also a family run upholstery business since the early 90’s that offers upholstery services to local residents.  I got the opportunity to meet and speak with Norma Jeffers, the owner of this store, and I was most impressed with all the different types of upholstering projects and fabrics they offer clients. Keep in mind that if upholstery doesn’t meet with your budget, you can always consider their slip cover option.
