The Sheridan College Athletics and Recreation Department announced the 2013 Sheridan Bruins Hall of Fame Induction class today, with three former student-athletes and one team set for enshrinement during Sheridan's annual Homecoming on September 28.
"I make this point several times a year, but we truly relish the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our Bruins," athletic director Jim Flack said. "As they do every year, our Hall of Fame inductees this year embody what our vision of a student-athlete is. They not only showed tremendous grit and determination in achieving success on their respective playing surfaces, they applied that same enthusiasm in the classroom on their way to graduation."
Inductees
1989-90 Men's Volleyball
In the storied history of men's volleyball at Sheridan, the 1989-90 team is certainly one of the most decorated. They won the sixth OCAA championship in school history, which served as the second in a six season reign as provincial champions. They also became the second OCAA school to play for a national championship, following in the footsteps on the 1982-83 Canadian championship team from Sheridan. The team boasted several individual accomplishments as well, with Mike Albert and Rob Brown earning CCAA All-Canadian recognition, while head coach Paul Reader was the national coach of the year. All three individuals are all currently in the Sheridan Bruins Hall of Fame.
Athlete - Althea Brevett, women's volleyball 1984-87
Althea Brevett is one of the most decorated women's volleyball players in Sheridan history, having been a part of the Double-Blue's only OCAA championship in 1984-85, while rounding out her career with OCAA bronze (85-86) and silver medals (86-87). In all three years she was an OCAA All-star, while also earning post-season awards, having been MVP of the 1985 OCAA Championship tournament and a championship tournament all-star in 1986 and 1987. During her three seasons, the team posted a 36-11 OCAA conference record, and never finished lower than third in the standings.
Athlete - John Falcon, men's hockey 1974-77
John Falcon was the first Bruin to ever put together an All-Canadian campaign, having received the honour for the 1976-77 season when he led the team in scoring (24 goals, 19 assists). That year, the Double-Blue were twice on the cusp of a championship, finishing as finalists in both OCAA and CCAA competition. Falcon played an integral role as a team captain, OCAA All-Star and Sheridan's male athlete of the year. He is one of the winningest players in team history, compiling a 47-12-2 record (.800) over his three year career.
Athlete - Harry Vlachos, men's basketball 1970-72
In the formative years of the OCAA, there were few players that could lay claim to being as dominant as Harry Vlachos. During the 1970-71 campaign, he scored 489 points in only 13 games for a per game average of 37.6, still a single season Sheridan record. His two year career produced 881 points -- currently the sixth highest total in school history -- with a career average of 28.4 points per game.
