Halton Police were called to a double drowning/near drowning in Oakville early Wednesday, July 10, 2019 afternoon. Shortly after the noon hour a call was received on 911 reporting that a 79 year-old female and a toddler were found face down in the family in-ground pool on Yarmouth Crescent. Yarmouth Cresent is close to QE Park Community and Cultural Centre.

A neighbour pulled out the elderly female and the mother of the toddler pulled out the child.

Officers arrived on scene an immediately performed CPR on the 79 year-old female.  Unfortunately lifesaving efforts by police and EMS were unsuccessful and she was declared dead at the scene.

The child however, a 4 year old girl, regained consciousness prior to Halton Regional police's arrival.  Paediatric paramedics from ORNGE ambulance service were nearby. They transported the child by land directly to McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton.  Her current condition is critical.

We can confirm that the relationship between the two is Grandmother & Granddaughter.

Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Bureau were notified and attended the scene, as is protocol; however there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this tragic incident at this time.

This is a Coroner's case and Halton Regional Police will not be making any further comment at this time.  We would however like to remind the public of ensuring young children are wearing proper floatation devices (PFD's) at all times when near pools or other recreational bodies of water, and to further ensure adults of vulnerable stature are capable of supervising young children in such environments.
