Blades Grab Sixth Straight Victory With 6-2 Win Over Hamilton

The Oakville Blades grabbed their sixth victory in a row on Friday, scoring four goals in the second period in an eventual 6-2 victory over the Hamilton Red Wings.

The first period proved to be one of the most fast and furious frames of the season. The shot clock may not have been off the charts, sitting at 18-10 after 20 minutes but the goalies were surely on the top of their game. Brendan McGlynn made the first highlight save of the night, robbing former Blade Joe Mitchell on a diving cross crease effort early in the period. Oakville controlled most of the scoring opportunities in the first, forcing Hamilton’s Alex Bishop to be stellar early. Both Matt Lippa and Max Lindsay had partial breakaway chances that appeared to beat Bishop, but neither pucks managed to make it over the goal line.

That would change with about five minutes to go in the first. With almost every forward on the team attempting to get one past Bishop, Ryan Garvey scored on a hard wrist shot that fooled the Red Wings goaltender below the blocking arm. It was a triumphant return for Garvey, who won the Central Canada Cup with Team Oates a week prior along with Blades goaltender Daniel Mannella.

It took the Blades a little less time to score their second goal. While all alone on the rush, Max Lindsay beat Bishop with a nice quick deke to make it 2-0 Oakville just two minutes into the second. The goal wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Josh Kosack, who chipped the puck past the Hamilton defence and onto the blade of the speedy winger.

With 14:37 remaining in the second, the Blades would grab the three goal lead. This time, Garvey recorded his second of the night with a wrist shot, similar to his first goal near the end of the first period. Garvey has been red hot recently, as the scoring winger registered his third two goal performance in the past five games. Not included in that stat is his five point performance at the Central Canada Cup, a tournament in which Garvey really impressed everyone every time he hit the ice.

For the second time in three games, Vince Palermo’s night would end early due to a scuffle beside the Oakville net. This time, the Blades captain took on Hamilton’s Ryan Punkari, who became tied for second in penalty minutes on his club with 32 PIM.

Potentially the best moment of the night came with 2:31 remaining in the period. McGlynn, noticing that a Blades forward was sitting all alone at centre ice, came out of his crease to make an incredible pass to Josh Kosack. Kosack had nobody to contest him out there, and would dangle Bishop with a quick forehand, backhand effort to make it 4-0 Blades.

Was the second period scoring done just yet? Nope! Brandon Hughes somehow made it 5-0 with just 0.4 seconds remaining in the period. It capped off an incredible four goal outburst in the middle frame, proving that the Blades were in control.

Hamilton wouldn’t leave the game without potting one of their own. With just under ten minutes remaining, 2010 Belleville Bulls draft pick Erick Delaurentis took the loose puck and beat McGlynn, who had committed to the first shot just seconds prior. Four minutes later, Hamilton got their second of the contest when Alex Zaccaria with a solid wrist shot, giving his team a bit of life late in the game. The comeback effort would come up short for the Red Wings, as another late goal by Zackary Vukosa in his first game ever for the Blades allowed Oakville to snag their sixth victory in a row thanks to a strong 6-2 effort.
