A big first period effort was good enough to help the Oakville Blades tackle the Newmarket Hurricanes, defeating the visiting team by 6-2 at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville on Friday.

The Blades got off to one of the most improbable, but memorable starts that the OJHL has seen all season. A minute and a half into the game, red-hot forward Peyton Reeves found Evan Brown all alone in front of the net, who one-timed the puck past Dalton Ewing and in for the 1-0 goal early. Then, after three minutes of action, Drew Worrad would make it 2-0 Blades after picking up the pass in front from Ryan Garvey, giving the Blades the 2-0 lead before the game really even got started.

Things got really interesting just 20 seconds after that. In a rare circumstance, the Blades were able to take the 3-0 lead after just three shots to grab a massive lead early in the contest. Ryan Foss would give the Blades their next goal, turning a Patrick Kudla pass into a big 3-0 lead. It was clearly a tough start for the Newmarket backup goaltender, but he was able to make a very big glove save on Garvey to keep himself focused after a tough start.

The Hurricanes found a way to put one on the board after a horrendous start. With Oakville's Paul Butler in the box, Mark Rozanov was able to give his team their first goal of the contest after beating Brendan McGlynn on the breakaway, cutting Oakville's lead to two goals.

The Hurricanes looked like a much stronger team after allowing three goals, eventually bringing themselves within a goal a minute into the second. Alex Ierullo would find a small opening past McGlynn, putting Newmarket within a goal with a good portion of the game still to go. Oakville wasn't overly impressed by that. Brendan Doherty would help restore the two goal advantage after converting two good drop passes by Reeves and Brown into Oakville's fourth goal of the contest.

With just over 12 minutes to go, Bryce Misley made a nice back hand to Eric Holland, who ended Ewing's night with a tap-in shot at the doorstep. Ewing would get replaced after allowing five goals on 22 shots, with the Hurricanes electing to finish off the game with usual starter Connor Ryckman taking over. Ryckman would hold his own in the third period, but a late goal by Michael Mannara would spoil his personal shutout as the Blades ended the game with the 6-2 victory on Friday night.

The Blades will finish off their 2015  home campaign with a 1:30 pm meeting against the St. Mike's Buzzers on Sunday, December 13, 2015. Santa Claus will be in the building handing out candy to all the good girls and boys, so we hope to see you there!
