Blades Start Weekend With Overtime Loss to Cobourg

The Oakville Blades fell 2-1 to the Cobourg Cougars in the first of two home games at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex this weekend.

The first three minutes saw some fantastic hockey, with high speeds and tough checks in a nice spread that saw no stoppages. Fortunately for the Blades, the first stoppage of the game came thanks to a goal on just the first shot of the contest. Ryan Foss, who was honoured before the game for winning the Gongshow Southwest Conference Player of the Month for October, got the game rolling with his 21st point of the season after taking a pass from Bryce Misley and firing it in the net from the slot, giving Oakville the early 1-0 lead.

The Cougars had their share of chances in the first, and it led to the 1-0 goal. With six minutes remaining in the frame, Hunter Atchison took a hard shot from outside the left face-off circle and beat Brendan McGlynn cleanly through the legs, tying the game up at one apiece after 20 minutes of play.

The second period didn't see any goals scored, very similar to Oakville's 2-1 double overtime victory over Cobourg last Friday. Both teams played a very even contest, exchanging solid chances at both ends but only to see the goalies steal the show.

For the second straight Friday, the Blades would find themselves in a next-goal-wins situation in overtime. Four-on-four OT started with the Blades up a man for 15 seconds, but nothing would come out of it. The Cougars, however, would get one with 2:15 left in overtime when Ryan Casselman beat McGlynn blocker side and gave Cobourg the 2-1 victory.

Oakville will play their second home game of the weekend against the other Cougars, the Burlington Cougars, on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 7:30 PM at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Hope to see you there!
