Cheering On Our Athletes

Southwestern Ontario has been home to some incredible sporting feats over the past few weeks. Team Canada won a record 217 medals at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games, with Ontario athletes securing half of those medals. While all eyes were focused on the Pan Am Games, another great Canadian athlete was quietly turning the world of golf on its head.

Golfer David Hearn, a native of Brantford, Ontario, went into the final day of the RBC Canadian Open in the lead and potentially becoming the first Canadian golfer to win the title in 61 years. It was not to be for Hearn this year, but the Canadian's third place finish is a notable accomplishment all the same.

If the success of TO2015 is any indication, we welcome witnessing great sporting accomplishments on home turf and are proud of the performances and sportsmanship of all our athletes. Hearn was impressive to watch throughout the Open and he clearly had much support from the crowd who spent their days at Oakville's Glen Abbey Golf Club this past weekend.

While this year would not be the year for a Canadian to win the Open, it is only a matter of time. Hearn agrees: In a post-tournament interview he said a Canadian will soon win the Canadian Open. Overshadowed by a great week of sports here in Ontario, Hearn's performance at the 2015 RBC Canadian Open deserves recognition.

I applaud David Hearn and all the Canadian professional golfers who have excelled at the sport that seems counterintuitive to the climate in our part of the world. Supporting our athletes continues to be a worthwhile initiative-whether it's for our Pan Am and Parapan Am athletes, our young people in local sports organizations, or professionals such as David Hearn. It is also vital that we continue to participate in and host international events such as the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games and the Canadian Open, bringing the world to our doorstep and giving our athletes an opportunity to compete with a home crowd cheering them on.

Congratulations David and congratulations to Team Canada for your outstanding contributions to sport in Canada.
