On June 10, 2017, cyclists of all ages and skill levels rode 17kms through South Oakville in what Cycle Oakville hailed as a hugely successful kick-off event for Cycle Oakville’s 2017 cycling season.
Happiest On My Bike is the mantra for Cycle Oakville’s push in 2017 to get more people riding their bike around Oakville and the June 10th social ride coincided with the province-wide Bike Month running until the end of June.
Cycle Oakville, which is Oakville’s leading cycling advocacy organization, organizes group social rides, advocates for the building of more cycling infrastructure and cycle friendly business districts in the Town of Oakville.
Cycle Oakville Director of Community Organizing, Jim Ivey, led the group from Downtown Oakville through South East Oakville and Kerr Village on a ride that ended at the Kerr Village Handmade & Vintage Market at the corner of Westside Drive and Kerr Street.
Doug Sams, Executive Director of the Kerr Village Business Improvement Area said he was very pleased to see so many cyclists visit the Kerr Village Handmade & Vintage Market on what ended up being a hugely successful day for the market vendors.
In total, the Kerr Village Handmade & Vintage Market welcomed over 1100 visitors throughout the day on Saturday.
One of our goals with community social rides is to really illustrate the benefits of cycling for residents as well as the Town as a whole. For Oakville businesses, they benefit significantly when cyclists visit their stores as it’s proven that cyclists make more trips and spend more money per month than customers who arrive by automobile. By doing these social rides we try to illustrate the purchasing power of cyclists and the significant benefits that come from riding your bike.
