The Oakville Blades played their third game of the weekend on Thursday against the St. Michael’s Buzzers, with goaltender Christopher Elliot shining in a 3-2 double overtime loss.
The Blades played most of the first period in their own end, with Elliot coming up huge on many chances. One of them included a behind-the-back blocker deflection on Cameron Searles, keeping the game scoreless early on.
But with 8:00 left in the first, Searles would get the next left. This time, with Jackson Doherty in the box, Searles tapped in the pass to the right of Elliot and beat the Blades goalie to make it 1-0 in the first period.
The Blades were able to tie the game up with time ticking down in the second period. With 18:06 complete in the frame, Nicholas Turenko sent the puck to Jackson Bales, who then wrapped in front of the net and tucked it under the glove of Cosimo Lazzarino’s glove for the goal. It sent the two teams into the intermission tied.
Elliot was the star for Oakville for most of the game and that continued two minutes into the third period. With St. Michael’s top line buzzing around the crease, Elliot managed to sprawl out and keep the puck from just crossing over the line, instead keeping the game tied at two apiece.
At the other end, the Blades managed to score a big goal to take the lead. At 3:11, Bryce Misley, fresh off of playing at the 2017 CJHL Top Prospect game, fed Ryan Foss in front, with the experienced veteran beating Lazzarino for the 2-1 goal.
Unfortunately for Oakville, a disputed tripping penalty against Turenko would result in a goal for the Buzzers. Just five seconds into the penalty at 11:50, Cameron Wright’s point shot would get tipped in by Mark Paolini that tied the game at two apiece. The game saw many penalties coming at both ends.
With 60 minutes complete and with no winner declared, the game went into overtime. Just 31 seconds into the game’s second extra frame, Cameron Wright ended the game on the power play thanks to a perfectly placed wrist shot, beating Elliot for the winning goal.
Oakville’s next game will be this Saturday in Stouffville, a 7:30 PM start against the Spirit. Oakville’s next home game isn’t until Friday, February 3rd when the Toronto Jr. Canadiens come to Sixteen Mile Sports Complex at 7:30 PM.
