More kids will have access to the Town of Oakville’s recreation programs thanks to $2,309 raised by Oakville Aquatics staff this summer.
All the proceeds, raised through bake sales, a game night and donations, will go toward Oakville’s Recreation Connection Fund which allows kids access to recreation programs regardless of their family’s income level. The money raised by aquatic staff is enough to cover one child’s registration in all swim classes ranging from Parent and Tot to National Lifeguard Instructor.
“Our recreation programs empower kids to build confidence, develop leadership skills and challenge themselves in nationally-recognized certification programs in a variety of activities,” said Colleen Bell, commissioner of Community Services for the Town of Oakville. “Programs such as swimming in particular are a necessary life-skill that all children need to learn. I’m very proud of our 150 Aquatics staff for volunteering their time to give back to the community.”
According to the Halton Poverty Roundtable, one out of every 10 Halton residents live below the poverty line, and more than 11,000 of those are children. With statistics like these, it's easy to see how many children lack the opportunity to take part in recreation programs.
