Canadian star John Tavares will miss the remainder of the 2014 Winter Olympics after suffering a leg injury.
The New York Islanders captain was taken into the boards by Arturs Kulda in the second period of the quarter-final contest against Latvia on Wednesday. After appearing to be in serious pain, the Canadian player would be helped off the ice and would not return to action.
Tavares, a former St. Thomas Aquinas high school student in Oakville, had yet to record a point in four games at the tournament. He was the first Oakville-raised player to suit for the Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team since Rob Zamuner did back in Nagano in 1998.
There is still no word on Tavares' status for when the NHL returns to action next week. He currently has 66 points in 59 games with the Islanders this season.
