The Oakville Blades couldn’t top the Orangeville Flyers on Friday, losing 6-3 in their annual Remembrance Day game.
Despite getting the first power play, Orangeville would strike first. Ian Winslow rushed into the zone shorthanded and took a shot on Brendan McGlynn made the initial stop. Winslow kept with the play, however, and picked up the rebound putting it into the Blades net for the 1-0 lead after 6:13 of play.
The Flyers scored again with 9:11 left in the opening period. Zack Lyons scored this time, taking the puck from behind the net and tapping it in on the slight wrap-around, giving Orangeville the 2-0 advantage.
With 5:41, the Flyers made it 3-0. Nick Criminisi tallied on the breakaway, going in all alone and beating McGlynn blocker side with the deke. The goal was the last McGlynn would face, with the Team Hawerchuk Eastern Canada Cup representative getting pulled in favour of Chris Elliot.
The Blades scored a goal at 5:31 in the second. With much-sustained pressure, Jeff Clarke got the puck to Matt Hayami, who had his sights set on the net. He was successful in his pursuit of a goal, firing in the wrist shot to make it 3-1.
Oakville’s comeback effort got stronger as the game went on. At 12:21, Christian Rajic made a great pass from the corner to Tyler Hildebrandt, who then took the puck around the net. The St. Catherine’s native was lethal with his opportunity, tapping it past Barrie Colts prospect Ruan Badenhorst and in for the 3-2 goal.
But Orangeville fought back to take back their two-goal advantage. Hudson Lambert scored the goal for the Flyers, using his wrist shot to beat Elliot and in for the 4-2 goal.
Oakville got another late in the period. Peyton Reeves kept his eye on a rebound from an original shot by Drew Worrad, scoring into the open net. But in the final minute, Winslow would restore Orangeville’s two-goal lead again with a wrist shot while shorthanded, making it 5-3 heading into the intermission. Unfortunately for Oakville, they couldn’t add to their goal total in the third period, while Orangeville was able to add an empty netter for the 6-3 victory on Friday.
