Watch for Bikes Decal
Drivers or passengers opening their car doors in the path of cyclists contributes to one of the most frequent car-bike collisions, often resulting in serious injury to cyclists. In an effort to remind motorists to share the road and prevent injuries like this, the Town of Oakville partnered with CAA to launch the “Watch for Bikes” awareness program today.
“Council and I are proud to be the first municipality in south-central Ontario to carry the “Watch for Bikes” decal on the side mirrors of all of our non-emergency vehicles,” Mayor Burton said. “These decals are a great reminder to watch out for each other and the importance of being alert and aware while driving.”
Residents can help spread the word by picking up their free “Watch for Bikes” decal at Town of Oakville community centres, Town Hall, the Oakville Public Library Central branch and at the Oakville CAA Store at 360 Dundas Street East at Trafalgar Road.
“Car-bike collisions can easily be avoided with a little care,” said Caroline Grech, CAA Government Relations Specialist. “Partnering with the Town of Oakville on this initiative is a great way to get the message across the community.”
Throughout the month of June, town staff will be at community centres to offer more information on the campaign, as well as provide rules of the road and safety tips for cyclists and motorists. Visit oakville.ca for dates and times.
“Whether you’re a cyclist or a motorist, it’s important that we all share the road,” said Ward 2 Councillor Pam Damoff. “As an avid cyclist, I’m so happy and proud that Oakville is once again leading the way in making our roads a safer place for everyone to enjoy.”
