Who will represent Oakville in the 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay?

As a celebration community for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay, the Town of Oakville is now accepting nominations for its official torchbearer to carry the flame through Oakville next June.

According to the Torch Relay organizers, a torchbearer is someone who embodies the true spirit of the games and the Toronto 2015 vision to: inspire participation in sport; celebrate multiculturalism; and leave a legacy of sustainable excellence.

The Oakville Pan Am Torch Relay 2015 Community Committee will receive nominations online until Friday, January 9, 2015. The committee, including representatives from local sport and community organizations and town staff, will review all eligible nominations after January 9 to select one official torchbearer and two alternates. Those selected will be contacted by the committee by the end of January after which their names will be provided to the TO2015 Torch Relay organizers for final review and approval.

The Torch Relay is a 41-day journey to celebrate the spirit of the Pan Am Games in communities across Canada, starting May 30, 2015. The torch will travel through Oakville in June before its final stop at the Pan Am Games opening ceremonies in Toronto on July 10, 2015.

Oakville Torchbearer Nomination Period: December 1, 2014 to January 9, 2015

The Oakville Pan Am Torch Relay 2015 Community Committee will accept nominations beginning Monday, December 1, 2014 until Friday, January 9, 2015. The Oakville Pan Am Torch Relay 2015 Community Committee will review all eligible nominations after Friday, January 9, 2015 and select one official Oakville Torchbearer and two alternates. The selected torchbearer and alternates will be contacted by the committee before January 30, 2015.

Prior to completing the Oakville Torchbearer nomination form, please review the following torchbearer eligibility criteria to ensure you or the community member you are nominating meet the criteria for selection.

Oakville Torchbearer Eligibility

  • Be at least 13 years of age on or before May 30, 2015.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or legal resident of Canada.
  • Be a resident of the Town of Oakville.
  • Be able to run/walk/wheel the assigned 200-metre segment on the assigned day.
  • Be prepared and able to participate unaccompanied (except if you have special needs and require assistance) in the two- to three-hour torchbearer experience.
  • Be willing to travel at your own expense to the assigned Oakville meeting point and then from the finish point of the relay segment.
  • Wear the provided torchbearer uniform (without any other branded clothing) for the duration of your torchbearer experience.
  • Consent to undertake and successfully complete a security background check.
  • Sign the participation waiver on or before your assigned relay day.
  • Provide a valid email address and phone number in order to facilitate the selection process and prepare for the torch relay experience.
  • Agree to having your profile and image published or released by TO2015, sponsors or media for the purposes of publicizing the TORONTO 2015 Torch Relay and/or the Town of Oakville.
  • Cannot be an elected official or candidate running for public or political office.
  • Cannot be an employee or contractor of TO2015.
