On Tuesday, June 5, 2018 an Oakville tutor was arrested and charged by the Halton Regional Police Service’s Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit (C.A.S.A.) The arrest and charges were the result of an investigation.
A 24 year-old woman of Oakville has been charged with:
A youth is an individual under the age of 16.
The accused is a private home tutor in the Town of Oakville and the charges are related only to the accused’s role as a private home tutor. The offences are alleged to have taken place between May 2018 and June 2018.
The accused was also contracted by “Beyond the Classroom”.
“I am deeply saddened and shocked about this incident and it is not related to her contract at Beyond the Classroom. Danielle is no longer with Beyond the Classroom and has no contact with our students. We do our utmost in due diligence in screening every teacher with Beyond the Classroom before they begin work with us. This includes a thorough personal interview, current police record check, and vulnerable sector screening. Parents are also required to be in the home during the tutoring sessions. We have contacted all families with Beyond the Classroom to provide them information about this situation”. – Cathy Thompson, founder, Beyond the Classroom
She is currently employed by the District School Board of Niagara as a secondary school supply teacher.
“As we understand, the charges are related to Ms. Speck’s work as a private tutor and not to her employment with the District School Board of Niagara. However, student safety is a top priority and these are serious charges. Ms. Speck will not be returning to the DSBN pending the outcome of the legal process and the DSBN’s own internal investigation. If anyone feels they have information that would be helpful to police, we would encourage them to contact the Halton Regional Police Service.” – Brett Sweeney, Communications Officer – District School Board of Niagara.

Additionally, she is employed at Appleby College in Oakville as a camp counsellor.
“The charges laid are related to the accused’s role as a private home tutor for events that took place between May and June 2018. The allegations are not affiliated with Appleby College or Appleby Camps.” – Tracey Pearce-Dawson – Director, Corporate Communications – Appleby College
The accused was held for a bail hearing.
