It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Derek Mason: a devoted husband, and loving father, brother and friend. Surrounded by the love and comfort of his family, he left us peacefully on January 16th, 2025, after a long illness.

Derek is survived by his wife Karen Backman, daughters Avery and Isabel, siblings Gary (June) in St. John’s, Gail in Tasmania AU, David (Anne) in Ottawa, sister-in-law Pam (Roland) in Toronto, brother-in-law Bruce in Adelaide AU, and his many cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents David and Verna Mason.

Born in Summerside PEI, Derek’s early years were shaped by his life as an Air Force kid, moving between several bases in Canada, England and France. After a brief military career, Derek trained as an electronics technician and worked at Dymaxion Research in Halifax for 13 years where he met the love of his life, Karen. Together, they eventually moved to Toronto where Derek moved into supply chain management, taking on key roles with companies like Okidata, BCE Emergis, and UPS-SCS. In 2013 he started his own business, leaving corporate life to follow his passion for carpentry and home renovations.

A naturally talented athlete, Derek excelled in a variety of sports, including hockey, baseball, soccer, squash, skiing and golf. His ideal day, however, was one spent on the golf course. Derek loved games of all kinds, including pool, cards, and board games, and was always easygoing yet somehow won every time.

Derek was a creative soul, often cooking up delicious meals, painting landscapes and designing and creating countless gardens. A lifelong animal advocate, he was also a devoted cat whisperer.

But above all, his greatest joy was being a father—an engaged, supportive, and fun presence in his daughters' lives. His commitment to his kids allowed them both to remember and carry on his values of integrity, authenticity and living in the moment.

Derek and Karen shared 34 incredible years together as soulmates and best friends, building a life full of love, laughter and adventure. Whether travelling, hiking, enjoying music, or spending time with family and friends, they created memories that will last a lifetime. In recent years, they also found joy in peaceful walks by the lake, working out at the Y, and enjoying quiet nights at home.

Derek’s warmth, humour, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. To offer an online condolence please visit oakviewfuneral.ca
