Local police have arrested and charged a suspect in relation to a sex trafficking investigation that has been underway for nearly a month.
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) frist shared the report today, Tuesday, Jan. 28, about an arrest made yesterday in the case.
According to case files, the Halton Regional Police Service began an investigation earlier this month into a report of an adult female who was allegedly being trafficked by the suspect within the Burlington and Greater Toronto Area.
Members of the HRPS Human Trafficking Unit took carriage of the investigation and determined that over the course of approximately 10 months the suspect physically assaulted, sexually assaulted, coerced, controlled and exploited the victim in the sex trade while the suspect benefitted financially from the exploitation.
As a result of the investigation, on Jan. 27, 2025, Michael Mazza (40) of no fixed address was arrested and charged with the following offences:
• Trafficking in Persons
• Material Benefit from Trafficking in Persons
• Material Benefit from Sex Services
• Procuring
• Assault (two counts)
• Assault with a Weapon
• Sexual Assault Cause Bodily Harm (Choking)
• Utter Threat to Cause Death
• Uttering Forged Document
• Fraud - Over $5,000
• Theft of a Motor Vehicle
Mazza was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.

Some signs and indicators of Human Trafficking can include:
- Not being allowed to speak for themselves
- Not having control of their own money or cellphone
- Suddenly having a new or second cell phone with a secret number
- Being controlled by others and escorted at all times
- Not being allowed to contact family or friends
- Withdrawing from family and friends
- Providing rehearsed answers to casual questions
- Being secretive about their activities
- Showing signs of abuse, such as bruising, cigarette burns, fractures, etc.
- Having a new boyfriend, girlfriend, or friend who they won't introduce to friends/family
- Having new items (clothing, jewellery, etc.) outside their financial means
