Halton Police host provincial police at impaired holiday driving campaign launch

Halton Police hosted press conference to launch the provincial Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign

Police services from across Ontario gathered at the Halton Police Service Head Quarters here in Oakville for a press conference to Launch the Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign against impaired driving throughout the holiday season.

The annual campaign promotes traffic enforcement and raises awareness about the many dangers associated with alcohol- and drug-impaired driving.

Yesterday's Oakville event included police services and campaign supporters dedicated to promoting safe driving throughout Ontario this holiday season, including the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP), the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS).

In 2024 alone, the Halton Police have arrested and charged 357 residents for impaired driving.

"Our message is simple: Just don't do it," said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner when he spoke at the podium.

"The consequences of driving under the influence or under the influence of other illegal substances cause tremendous ramifications for communities, for families, and for loved ones."

The campaign will see an increase in roadside spot-checks on important roadways as well as off-ramps of highways.

Police officers have said that between the years of 2012 and 2020, the percentage of drivers that have been killed while under the influence has skyrocketed to more than double the previous percentage.

The province has seen 44 deaths this year from impaired driving according to OPP Deputy Commissioner Rohan Thompson.

The police are urging people this holiday season to plan their rides accordingly or to take public transit so they do not run the risk of being added to the list of impaired drivers arrested this year.
