The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) have made one arrest after an armed home invasion in Oakville. They are still seeking two additional suspects.
On this past Saturday, Nov. 30, at approx. 4:50 a.m., police were called to a residence on Greeneagle Drive. Three suspects attended the residence and forced the front door open. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun.
When confronted by a resident of the home, the suspects made demands for the keys to the vehicles parked in the driveway. The resident was also punched multiple times.
Police attended and after a short foot chase managed to arrest one of the suspects.
Cleveland Vanevery (23) of Oshweken has been charged with the following:
- Robbery with a Firearm
- Break and Enter
- Disguise with Intent
- Fail to Comply- Being on a Release Order
- Possession of Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order
Vanevery was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
The resident of the home was transported to hospital for treatment of the injuries and has since been released.
Some items were taken from the home, but later recovered abandoned by police. No vehicles were stolen and the handgun was not recovered by police.
“I can only imagine the fear that was felt by the victim and his family when three armed men broke into their home at 5 a.m. and assaulted him, causing injuries, including a broken nose. Thankfully, the quick response of our front-line officers resulted in the arrest of one of the suspects near the scene,” said HRPS Chief, Stephen Tanner.
"Violent home invasions have occurred too frequently in Halton, and across the GTA this year – often for the keys to valuable motor vehicles. In this particular case, I am appalled that the individual we arrested and who is now charged with Robbery with a Firearm, Break and Enter, Disguise with Intent, Fail to Comply with a Release Order and a Weapons Prohibition Order committed yet another violent offence. It’s worth noting that the weapons prohibition order is in place because he was previously convicted of possessing a firearm. In fact, he was on a release order from Niagara Regional Police Service for Possession of Stolen Property (3 counts) with a condition to not possess any weapons, and that is as recent as October 12th, 2024."
"This same accused has been convicted of 25 offences," he continued, "including Possession of a Firearm, Theft of Vehicle, Break and Enter, Assault with a Weapon, Arson, and multiple charges in relation to failing to comply with previous orders in the past."
"Our citizens should not have their personal safety and the security of their own property threatened by violent and repeat offenders who are out on bail, and who are bound by court orders to which they have no intention of complying with. Yet these same violent offenders continue to be released and further victimize more people through their ongoing criminal acts of incredible violence. These types of offenders should be held in custody, and subject to substantial jail terms upon conviction."
The outstanding suspects are described as - a male with a heavy build, wearing black clothes and a black face mask/balaclava and male with a thin build wearing light coloured clothing with a black face mask.
