On Monday, January 14th, Town Council decide whether to Opt-out or in of having private cannabis retail stores in Oakville. A report from Municipal Enforcement Services and Legal Department of December 13, 2018 will be used in the decision.

Private Cannabis Retail key report points:

  1. A private retail model for the sale of recreational cannabis launches April 1, 2019
  2. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) will license and regulate privately run recreational cannabis retail stores
  3. Retail cannabis store locations must be a 150m from retail stores and schools
  4. Oakville has a one-time option to opt-out of having cannabis retail stores.
  5. Notification deadline to opt-out is January 22, 2019.
  6. Should Oakville choose to opt-out, we can opt back in at any time
  7. Should Oakville opt-in that decision is final

“All that can be considered by Council is whether or not to accept the Province’s offer to allow our municipality to opt out of having physical retail stores for the sale of cannabis,” stated the Mayor

“We must and do accept that the product is legal and will be distributed and used legally. Both online sales and the Province’s warehouse are matters over which no Council has any say.

“The only question is whether we are comfortable having no local say over any aspect of store operations, locations, or numbers. On only the question of physical retail stores, the Province has allowed municipalities a one-time only opportunity to opt out with the ability to opt-in later. There is no opportunity to opt out after January 22nd.

I continue to encourage residents to share their thoughts with their councillors and me on this question,” commented Mayor Burton

The meeting takes place at 7:00 PM, at the Halton Regional Centre’s Council Chambers.
