Online I discovered a winery in the Greater Boston area by the name of Turtle Creek. I like their quote, "Mirabile dictu! In vino narratio" (In wine is the story, marvelous in the telling). Strangely enough, I just realized as I am writing this article that I am sitting on pillows purchased in Boston several years ago during a family holiday. My young son affectionately called our hotel "Boston House" and still does, as we have very found memories of our visit to this great city.
Back to the story of Turtle Creek, a small vineyard and boutique winery located in Lincoln, founded in 1999. According to French Oak TV, they are "regarded as one of the best producers of vinifera grape wines in Massachusetts, New England, and beyond." Turtle Creek produces only vinifera-based wines, several of the same varieties we are known for in Ontario: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling. The owner and winemaker, Kip Kumler, makes his wines in a Burgundian style, as opposed to the fruit-forward style typically found in new world wines. He also aims for quality versus quantity in the wines he produces.
Speaking of wine, what is happening in Oakville? The Oakville Wine Enthusiasts Club (OWEC) has tickets available for their special event, Prince Edward County Spring Fling, taking place May 25-26. This is an excellent opportunity to sample wine from the best wineries in the region!
So there you have it: Boston, Vinifera, and Burgundy.
