California, Long Beach and Beer: Oakville Sommelier

Cheers from California! This week I visited the Yard House in Long Beach, a restaurant named after the "Yard of Beer Glass" designed in Great Britain. This is a 3-foot-tall glass container which helped barkeeps easily pass drinks to stagecoach drivers so they would not have to climb down from their seats.

The Yard House has a keg room containing up to 5,000 gallons of beer at a time, and there are up to 5 miles of individual lines delivering beer to their island bar. With a large list of over 100 beers on tap, you can find most anything from lagers to ales, porters and stouts, to wheat beers, lambics, ciders and more! Even the non beer drinker should be able to find a beverage worthy of trying.

My mission there was Belgian beer. With many choices including Dubbels, Tripels, and Quadrupels on the menu, it was challenging to pick just one. Our server described several, made great recommendations, and poured some tasters. Then came the big decision on size. Did I want a Shorty, Goblet, Pint, or Half Yard?

I ended up with a pint of Leffe Blond from their "Strong - Spiced - Effervescent" category: floral aroma and spiced flavour, ABV 6.6%. Then I had a pint of Gulden Draak 9000 Quad from their Strong - Dark - Bold" category: amber colour and fruity aroma, ABV 10.5%. Both Belgians were delicious!

Thinking about beer, what are your recommendations for beer in Oakville? I understand there are many micro breweries to explore in Halton and Niagara these days... In Halton, the Oakville Wine Enthusiasts Club (OWEC) has LG Wine Imports presenting wines for the club tasting on May 31st.

So there you have it: California, Long Beach, Beer
