Date Night in Oakville: Moonshine Cafe

I'm not sure about the rest of the world, but for a great number of my friends date night is a priority in keeping our marriages healthy. Our date night are Wednesdays, and my teenage son is only too happy to watch us walk out the door.

IMG_0386Normally, we go to a movie or grab a bite to eat at one of the numerous Oakville restaurants. Last night - we decided to try something different. So we grabbed our coats and took a short walk to the Moonshine Cafe. Since publishing OakvilleNews.Org's Oakville Today update, the Moonshine Cafe was having interesting things happening. Yesterday was a Jazz Night coordinated by Richard Best. I've known Richard and his lovely wife Penny for years. He is a renaissance man with an incredible understanding of music, wine and writing - so I was certain that he would put together a great evening.

For those of you who haven't been the Moonshine Cafe, it is situated just south of Rebbeca on Kerr. The interior is reminiscent of your friend's basement from the 1970's including the bar. There are a whole bunch of chairs, and old couches covered with grandma's handmade blankets. There's a full bar and the cover charge was $5.00. A great deal cheaper than a movie.

IMG_0388So after walking in at 8:30 and saying hello to Richard and Penny, we settled  on a bench and ordered a pint of Flying Monkey Craft Beer  along with corn chips and salsa. The band was just setting up and by quarter to nine the Jazz was starting to play classic Jazz standards such as "Moondance". What we didn't initially realize that the group of musicians on stage weren't a band - but rather a group of talented musicians who had never played together. After a few tunes, another musician would take over the drums and piano. Finally - a singer stepped up to the mike and belted out a few tunes.

So I would like to give a big thank you to the following musicians, who surprised and thoroughly entertained us last night: Klaus Brockhausen (Tenor Sax), Richard Best (Drums), Bob Hatcher (Drums), Barry Smallbone (Guitar), Urmas Soomet (Bass), Ian Cairns (Piano) and Monty Greig (Singer). It was a great date night.

So if you are looking for a great night out with wonderful music - just drop in at the Moonshine Cafe.
