One of my big pursuits is to expose myself to all kinds of films that I never would normally see. And it’s always a huge delight when I come across a fantastic movie. Hustlers is one of these movies, incredible acting, engaging characters, and an intriguing story make this a wonderful piece of film. Though it’s not for families or young children.

A story about strong women who use their seductive prowess to extract thousands out of men might not sound like a good plot, but Hustlers manages to make it interesting, all while portraying these ladies as powerful and in control.

Based on the true story in New York City profits during the 2008 financial crisis. Destiny, down on her luck, meets Ramona who recruits her and other girls in a nasty plot using drugs and seduction to gain hefty profits from unsuspecting clients.

The characters here are the clear standout. All these women are awesome to watch, and the film knows it, giving several slow-motion shots of the crew walking set to cool music really presents these women as a force to be reckoned with.

Complimenting the great characters is the stellar acting to hold them up. Jennifer Lopez for starters is an acting powerhouse. Her portrayal of Ramona is immensely charismatic and compelling, worthy of all the Oscar talks that have been had about her with this film.

Constance Wu is not to be over looked either. Starring opposite to Lopez, Wu’s character; Destiny, is grounded and sympathetic. The story follows her struggle and fights it’s hardest to justify the heinous actions her and her cohorts make throughout.

One thing the does hinder the movie however is that it isn’t always clear what’s happening, unless you understand or know the story it’s based on. The beginning especially is hard to place exactly when the current moments are taking place. But luckily as it goes on it becomes much easier to follow and really keeps you hooked.

Parents take note, this film is absolutely not a family picture. There is plenty of nudity and swearing throughout that may not be suitable for younger viewers. So take that into consideration when planning movie night.

Other than that, audiences over 14 are going to really like this movie, though I’d recommend at least being familiar with the story it’s based on as it will be easier to follow.

Hustlers is exciting, interesting, and simply fantastic to watch.
