Monday Night at the Movies 2017, Oakville’s own international film series, unveils the first six titles of its fall/winter schedule, with Canada’s delightful gem, Maudie opened the season on September 11.
Through its partnership with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Monday Night at the Movies offers a special selection of films on select Mondays from September to April at the Cineplex Cinemas Winston Churchill. The independent film series provides Oakville audiences with unique access to some of the world’s finest films, not usually in wide distribution.
Film screenings start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each, cash only, and can be purchased at the Monday Night at the Movies’ table in the lobby of the theatre at 6:45 p.m. prior to the show. Each feature film screening starts with an animation short showcasing the talents of the graduating class from Sheridan College’s Computer Animation and Bachelor of Animation programs.

September 25: THE COMMUNE
(Denmark / Sweden / Netherlands)
Set in 1970s Copenhagen, the new film from lauded director Thomas Vinterberg focuses on a well-off professional couple (Trine Dyrholm and Ulrich Thomsen) who, upon inheriting a large house, decide to experiment with communal living. Energized by the era's relaxed taboos, the couple assembles a diverse, rather motley crew of cohabitants and embarks on their adventure.
October 2: THEIR FINEST

Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig directs a sterling British cast — including Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy, Jack Huston and Richard E. Grant — in this comedy-drama about a group of filmmakers struggling to make an inspirational film to boost morale during the Blitz of London in World War II.
October 16: FRANTZ

Director François Ozon’s haunting tale of love and remembrance is set in a small German town in the aftermath of World War I, where a young woman mourning the death of her fiancé forms a bond with a mysterious Frenchman who has arrived to lay flowers on her beloved’s grave.

The infamous shower sequence in Hitchcock’s masterpiece, Psycho, has been seared in the heads of moviegoers for generations. Alexandre O. Philippe’s 78/52 seeks to understand just what made that scene so legendary, deconstructing it to explore what each stab of the knife meant for cinema and culture. Sure to delight anyone who still gets a little nervous when they hear a strange sound in the shower. Thanks to Mr. Hitchcock, that is essentially everyone in the known universe.
November 13: LOST IN PARIS

Replete with the amazing antics and intricately choreographed slapstick that has come to define Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon's work, Lost in Paris is a wondrously fun and hectic tale of peculiar people finding love while lost in the City of Lights.

Monday Night at the Movies is a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization. Any surplus of funds at the end of the programming year is donated to a variety of local charities and community groups.
