The Upside is the tale of recently paroled ex-con Dell Scott (Kevin Hart) in search of a job. Upon his search he is by chance taken into an interview to be a full time caregiver for billionaire and quadriplegic Phillip Lacasse (Bryan Cranston) who lost the use of his limbs in an accident.
Phillip has lost more than just the use of his arms and legs, he lost his hope, due to the untimely death of his longtime wife. Dell being hired to be the full-time caregiver does not sit well with his executive associate Yvonne Pendelton (Nicole Kidman) who doesn’t feel the need to give Dell a chance as he has little real interest in the job and no experience.
The two men are both at real low points and as they get to know each other a strong relationship begins to form. They both begin to do things to elevate each other emotionally and personally. Dell having had a rough upbringing doesn’t really know how to make something of himself but is captivated by the finer things that make up Phillip’s world.
The relationship is not without its conflicts and the two of them start to grow together. Dell helps to show Phillip that despite being confined to a chair, there is still so much the world has left to give him.
From start to finish this film offers a variety of charming moments and genuine laughs. Bryan Cranston has a really strong performance from start to finish. He does so much with his facial expressions to really draw you in. Phillip cant move and yet Bryan is able to be so large in the movie.
A real surprise in this movie was Kevin Hart’s performance. The Upside is a comedy but it also has a lot of heart and Kevin really hits the mark on both the comedic and dramatic sides of this role. There is a lot of growth his character has to go through and you can really see feel that emotional growth in the character.
The quality banter, the playful jabs and the brotherly bond that carries The Upside are all you need to enjoy your time at the theater. This is a fun movie that will warm you heart and leave you with a smile.
