Ward 2 Councillor Cathy Duddeck and I invite the community to join us on Saturday, July 26th to watch Despicable Me 2 at Coronation Park. This free movie screening is being presented in association with Film.ca, who are providing all of the projection, audio and popcorn equipment, services and staffing.
The fun will begin around 7:00 pm with family-friendly activities in the park, including free face painting, mini-putt and a visit from the Oakville Fire Department.
Terry Fox would have celebrated his 56th birthday on July 28, and both Cathy and I are involved in organizing the local event. The Movie Night is a way of celebrating Terry and we hope people will support the Run while enjoying a night out with their families.
M&M Meat Shop, 2163 Sixth Line, Oakville will be selling hot dogs and soft drinks in support of the Oakville Terry Fox Run. Bring your water bottle because free water bottle refills will be available from one of the Town's water refill stations. Representatives from the Oakville Terry Fox Run will be on site with information about the Run and special “In Memory” and “In Honour” signs which will be available for purchase for $5, with all proceeds going to the Run. Samples of this year's t-shirts will also be available. This year the run will be on September 14, 2014.
We want to encourage as many people as possible to leave their cars at home, so they ask that people walk, bike or take Oakville Transit to the event. There will a bike corral located just west of the entrance to the park.
Oakville Transit has two routes which travel to Coronation Park: Route 14 and Route 2. Route 14 departs the Oakville GO Station every half hour (at :25 and :55 past), and stops at Third & Lakeshore – just a quick walk to the park. Connect at the Oakville GO or hop on in Downtown Oakville, or along Rebecca Street. Route 2 runs every hour from the Bronte GO Station (departing at :35) and stops directly in front of the park. Connect at Bronte GO or hop on at a transit stop along Lakeshore Road from east or west (please note Route 2 service ends between 9pm and 10pm so check travel times) . We are blessed with the perfect venue at Coronation Park for this type of event. It has pretty special the last two years when the sun went down to see a movie showing on the big screen. I can't wait for this year!
Books With No Bounds will be selling freezies to support the Oakville Terry Fox Run. Rather than books this year, they are asking if residents can bring along new stuffed animals that are sent to First Nations kids in crisis as part of outreach programs – so far Oakville teens, Emma and Julia Mogus, have shipped 40,000 books, as well as craft supplies, stuffed animals and more to remote communities, primarily in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.
No movie would be complete with popcorn, and Film.ca will also be providing a bag of popcorn for a $1 donation to the Terry Fox Run.

Information will be available about the Town's initiative to preserve Oakville's tree canopy and to raise awareness about the Emerald Ash Borer. Kids might even get to see a giant Emerald Ash Borer wandering around the park – although this bug is much nicer than the nasty one that invades our ash trees. There will be copies of the new Cycle, Walk Oakville maps as well as Oakville Transit service schedules for those looking for information on how to get around town without their car.
