Oakville Eats: Maro's a family restaurant

So about a week ago, I noticed a change to a restaurant on Kerr Street called Maro's. It's located beside the Moonshine Cafe just south of Rebecca. What caught my eye was a light fixture made from a rough beam hung horizontally with antique-style bulbs hanging from it.

I've seen this restaurant at least a hundred times and was aware they made burritos that my son enjoys. So last week, I wandered in for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised.

As you enter, there are several tables and chairs and an open kitchen located at the back. Several wooden stools are placed against a bar that separates the dining area from the kitchen. I like sitting at the bar when I'm alone since watching the cook at work is fun. At this time, Maro was preparing fresh salsa, busily chopping up the ingredients. There are no bags of pre-made, flash-frozen food in this kitchen - a good sign.

What really comes across at Maro's is his deep commitment to deliver excellent food, while enjoying the company of his diners.

The atmosphere is moving away from fast food franchise to a fresh, flavourful and family-friendly restaurant, and the menu was updated at the beginning of April. The space has lots of room and is sparkling clean, so you can sit back and enjoy a Turkish coffee or a classic Persian tea.

You order from a menu which is located just above the kitchen. There are burritos with varying ingredients; you can have the same in a pita or a salad bowl for those who want to decrease their carbs. Ingredients include avocado, chicken, salsa, green peppers, onions, rice, and homemade garlic or burrito sauces. He also infuses a little Persian flavouring, providing that extra flavour.

There is a selection of salads for those who want to enjoy a lighter fair. For dessert lovers, they have recently introduced a deep-fried snicker's bar, along with a delicious assortment of baklava, Persian style.

Prices are reasonable, ranging from $5.50 for a Burrito Bowl Salad to $13.95 for a chef's special dinner, and you will not be disappointed by the portion sizes. So if you are looking for excellent Mediterranean food with a down-to-earth vibe that makes you feel comfortable bringing your parents and children, I highly recommend Maro's.
