A festival organized by TIFF celebrating the best in Canadian Cinema will have two films by Sheridan Bachelor of Animation students – Feathers and This is Not an Animation – screening as part of its Top Ten Student Shorts Programme. This is the second-consecutive year two Sheridan student films have been part of the festival.

Feathers, a stop-motion animated film created by a group of third-year students (Sarah Kieley, Eustace Ng, Melissa Gabric, Sarah Stefanon, Anita Yen, Melissa Chin, Christine Le, Lilja Pettursdottir, and Jacob MacMillan) who call themselves Hands On Deck Pictures, was previously recognized by Air Canada’s enRoute Film Festival with its Achievement in Animation honour.

This is Not an Animation (Ceci n’est pas une animation) was created by Federico Kempke as his fourth-year thesis film. It’s about a group of animators who are followed through the process of creating the “ultimate animated film.” Federico was presented with the Dean Deblois Animation Award at Sheridan Industry Day 2016. The recent graduate now works as a Key Animator at DHX Media in Vancouver.

“The third and fourth-year films our Bachelor of Animation students create are the result of hours upon hours in the studio honing their skills,” says Ronni Rosenberg, Dean of the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design at Sheridan. “It’s a proud moment for Sheridan and much deserved for these students to see their work recognized in a national showcase of Canadian cinema talent.”

The Toronto screening of Canada’s Top Ten takes place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox from January 13 to January 26, 2017. The Top Ten shorts panel will select the student shorts winners for best film in January.
