Toronto hosts the Special Olympics International Youth Games from May 14 to 17, 2019.

The Knights of Columbus are wonderful supporters of this cause. They sponsor the Special Olympics Flag Relay that runs from early January to late March. It finishes 50 days before the Special Olympics.

The Flag Relay raises money for, and public awareness of the Special Athletes. These athletes show great determination and dedication. Empowerment is the focus for Special Olympics.

“Let me win and if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt” is the oath recited by these Special Olympic Athletes. And determined they are.

The Knights of Columbus Flag Relay event overflowed with special people – both the athletes and the people there who wished them well.

This large event was held at St. Thomas Aquinas High School to honour the arrival of the Special Olympics Flag Relay.

“The Knights of Columbus Flag Relay event waves the Special Olympics flag and is raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics Oakville”, said James Montague chair of the Knights of Columbus Oakville Flag Relay.

The flag arrived in Oakville on Feb 4th and will be in Oakville until Feb 19th.

To welcome our Special Athletes and their supporters, Emergency Services personnel parked their vehicles outside the school. Their lights were flashing, and the welcome mat was out!

Inside, Kevin Flynn was the MC for the Opening Ceremonies. The athletes were also welcomed by many dignitaries. They were there to support these special athletes and to extend their best wishes.

The flag was raised in the main school hallway. It was followed by free basketball games in school’s gym along with snacks and hot chocolate for all to enjoy.
