Local swimming competition highlights new cutting-edge wireless timing technology

The Oakville Aquatic Club proudly hosted the David Lawson Invitational swim competition, with over 250 swimmers racing through the pool

The Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) proudly hosted the annual David Lawson Invitational swim competition from Jan. 24–26 at the Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre, welcoming over 250 swimmers, competing over three exciting days of races.

This year’s invitational was particularly groundbreaking, as OAK became one of the first clubs in Canada to implement the innovative Time Drops wireless timing system at a swimming competition.

This endeavour further demonstrates OAK’s commitment to advancing swimming technology and enhancing the competitive experience.

Time Drops is a revolutionary timing system that offers both semi-automatic and fully automatic race timing options. Activated by a starting device and stopped at the finish by wireless keyfob-style buttons, the system eliminates the need for cumbersome and expensive timing equipment from past eras.

“Time Drops is a great example of how OAK is achieving our strategic commitment of leveraging new technologies to further advance our program deliveries and value. We are continually looking for ways to be leaders in aquatic sport, and we are glad to see this come to fruition again at the David Lawson meet” says OAK Business Manager Jason Morawski.

"This year’s David Lawson competition showcased OAK’s adaptability at its finest," says OAK Head Coach Dave Tontini.

"With the support of our incredible volunteers, our coaching team and swimmers embraced the challenge of competing in a new facility with a brand-new timing system, creating an outstanding racing experience for our athletes."

He finishes by adding, "We are grateful to the Town of Oakville for allowing us to host our first-ever competition at the beautiful Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre, and we look forward to building more successful partnerships in the future."

As the season progresses, OAK looks forward to its upcoming competitions, focusing on its younger swimmers. Two Mini Oaks Meets remain on the schedule, promising exciting opportunities for the younger athletes to shine.
