WATCH: Why a sex offender guilty of 'sickening' crimes is now a free man

Tonight on 'Closer Look': A Sudbury man who conspired to sexually abuse multiple children received a sentence that will leave many people wondering if the justice system is broken

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story includes details about a child sexual abuse investigation that readers may find disturbing.

In cities and towns across Ontario — and at Queen’s Park and Parliament Hill — our journalists work for you. Their mission is to dig for answers and tell you what they find.

This new feature — ‘Closer Look’ — is a chance to hear directly from those reporters and editors.

These conversations go beyond the headlines, helping viewers better understand how we gather the details that land in your local news feed.

On tonight's episode: No more jail time for a "sickening" sex offender.

James McGuire, a 41-year-old Sudbury man, pleaded guilty last year to string of sexual offences involving children. Among the charges, McGuire conspired with two local mothers for the opportunity to sexually abuse two young children.

Last week, McGuire received his sentence: six years in prison. But instead of going to jail, he walked out of court a free man.

Why? Although he had been in pre-trial custody for four years, McGuire was given extra credit because of poor conditions at the Sudbury District Jail.

"It's not often I’m somewhat at a loss for words, but the facts and circumstances surrounding the offences are horrific, disgusting and sickening," said Superior Court Justice Robbie Gordon.

“I want to enforce on you the importance of participating in this counselling with an open mind to bettering yourself, because without it, you are going to find yourself in jail for many more years,” the judge continued. "You’re going to do untold harm to innocent children, defenceless children who aren’t capable of consent."

Village Media's Jenny Lamothe, a reporter at Sudbury.com, joins us tonight with all the details. You can read her latest story about the case HERE.
