The Town of Oakville is purchasing the Deerfield Golf Club property – and the Fourteen Mile Creek lands from Upper Middle Road to Third Line – from the province.

The announcement was made Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Deerfield Golf Course, lifting any uncertainty over the greenspace’s future.

How Livable Oakville just became a lot less Livable

“Deerfield Golf Club and the Fourteen Mile Creek lands will remain Town-owned and protected recreational open space, neighbourhood parkland, and public green space with vital wildlife corridors and linked natural heritage systems,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “After the loss of the golf courses at Richview, White Oaks, and Saw-Whet it is important to protect what is left of our urban golf courses so everyone, young and old, can continue to enjoy them for years to come."

Urban public golf courses are becoming scarce.

Securing the balance of these Merton Lands (on the north side of the Queen Elizabeth Way and south of Upper Middle Road, between Bronte Road and Third Line) will ensure its natural environment is protected from residential development.

“We saw what happened when the previous government sold the Saw-Whet Golf Course to the private sector. I am proud that the Ontario Government, under the leadership of Premier Wynne and the Ontario Liberal Party, will protect this valuable green space,” said Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, who made the announcement on behalf of the Government of Ontario. “The decision to keep these lands in public ownership will benefit the Town and its citizens for generations to come, and demonstrates the commitment our party has to the environment and smart growth.”

Oakville Town Council remains committed to preserving, protecting and maximizing Oakville’s greenspace where possible.

Deerfield Golf Club is located at 2363 North Service Rd.
