Halton Healthcare is officially entering its "Taylor Era," and it's not just about catchy lyrics, it’s about making our paediatric care environment even more comforting and engaging for our young patients. The Paediatric team at Halton Healthcare, led by Child Life Specialist and ultimate “Swiftie” Jocelyn Leworthy, have launched "Tayvember," a month-long celebration of all things Taylor Swift, designed to help children feel more at ease during their hospital visits.

As part of "Tayvember,” the Paediatric team uses music, themes, and positive messages from Taylor Swift’s songs to create a therapeutic and fun atmosphere that resonates with children and adolescents. Every activity and space on the unit is specifically designed to ease the anxiety that many children feel when they visit the hospital.

Taylor Swift's music is beloved by millions of fans worldwide for its catchy melodies, meaningful lyrics, and the emotional connection it fosters. Leworthy saw an opportunity to use that same power to help paediatric patients cope with being in the hospital. By integrating familiar songs and relatable themes into her day-to-day work, Leworthy has created an environment where patients feel more like they're in a place of comfort and care rather than a clinical setting.

"Taylor Swift has a unique way of reaching children, teens and adults, helping them to express themselves and feel at ease,” says Leworthy. "Her music is full of storytelling, hope, and resilience, which makes it a perfect fit for creating a supportive and welcoming space for our patients. 'Tayvember' is not just about Taylor Swift, it's about letting patients be themselves and offering an escape that helps them feel less anxious and more empowered."

Throughout November, patients at Halton Healthcare's paediatric unit will take part in a variety of Taylor Swift-inspired activities, celebrating each of her 11 music eras. Activities include making friendship bracelets, tie-dyeing, Swiftie scavenger hunts, vision boards, and crafting affirmation cards to support coping. Staff will also join in with team-building activities such as sampling Taylor's favorite treats, dress-up days, and fun challenges. Each activity connects to Taylor's lyrics while incorporating Child Life strategies to promote coping, distraction, breathing strategies and creative ways for children to meet medical goals.

"Tayvember is a wonderful example of how our paediatric team is constantly thinking outside the box to ensure our patients feel safe, heard, and comfortable while at the hospital,” says Cheryl Hoare, Program Director, Women and Children at Halton Healthcare. “Their creativity and dedication are making a real difference for our young patients and their families."

While Taylor Swift takes the stage in Toronto this week, she’s already been performing in the hearts of Halton Healthcare patients and team members all month long, proving you don't have to be in the stadium to feel the magic of Taylor Swift.
