To enhance road and pedestrian safety at signalized intersections, Halton Region has been part of the province-wide red light camera program since 2012, with 23 cameras now operating across Halton.

In 2023, the program recorded a total of 14,558 infractions, averaging two infractions per day.

Here are the intersections with the most violations in 2023:

  • Guelph Line and South Service Road in Burlington — 1,447 infractions
  • Guelph Line and Mountainside Drive in Burlington — 1,367 infractions
  • Trafalgar Road and 5 Side Road in Halton Hills — 1,357 infractions
  • Derry Road and James Snow Parkway in Milton — 1,098 infractions
  • Derry Road and Commercial Street in Milton — 829 infractions

According to the Region, the program has been effective in reducing serious collisions caused by red light running. Since 2017, there’s been an approximate 21 per cent reduction of angle-type crashes at intersections with red light cameras.

In 2023, five new radar-equipped cameras were installed at the following locations, according to the report:

  • Dundas Street and Trafalgar Road in Oakville (westbound)
  • Guelph Line and South Service Road in Burlington (southbound)
  • James Snow Parkway and Main Street in Milton (northbound)
  • Trafalgar Road and Upper Middle Road in Oakville (northbound)
  • Trafalgar Road and Leighland Avenue in Oakville (southbound)

The Region plans to further expand the program in the coming years.
