The Rotary District 7080 organized the Grant Writing Initiative this year. The project aimed at encouraging Interact clubs to submit a Grant application to get funding from Rotary for a local charity of their choice.

Writing a grant application requires the use of different skills, including research, planning, excellent communication skills, team work and more. This is not something taught in school and yet, very important for several career paths that students may need in the future.

Interact clubs are high school based service clubs that are sponsored by Rotary. Six Interact clubs in the Rotary District 7820, two of them from Oakville, participated in this initiative: Abbey Park High School (APHS) and Iroquois Ridge High School (IRHS).

The former requested $1,000 for the Women’s Center of Halton and the latter $1000 for Halton’s Women’s Place. The applications included extensive research on the needs addressed by each institution, based on their mission and vision, contribution by the Interact club either in funding or in-kind and the specific need for which the funds would be allocated.

The other schools and applications presented included Nelson High School for Burlington Green, Streestville Secondary School for POGO (Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario), Dr. Frank J Hayden Secondary School for SAVIS (Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services) and Central Peel Secondary School for ‘The Shoe Project’ (YWCA).

Cheques were presented or mailed to the beneficiary organizations in early June.
