A young Oakville swimmer has broken Canada's 100m backstroke record.

On November 16, 2024 at the 2024 Alex Baumann Invitational, 12-year-old Lucas Bi from Oakville smashed the national 100m backstroke record.

This remarkable feat not only thrust Lucas into the spotlight again (after his performance in last year's event) but also established a new benchmark, surpassing the previous record set in 2019.

"I couldn't believe it when I touched the wall and saw the time," said Lucas. "It was an important milestone for me."

In addition to the national record, he has also broken four provincial records: the 200m IM, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, and 200m backstroke. Notably, the 200m backstroke record had stood for over 21 years.

Lucas began competitive swimming at the age of 10, quickly demonstrating a natural aptitude for the sport. Through years of training with his teammates at New Stars Swimming Club, his passion, dedication, and determination have propelled him towards achieving his dream.

Coach Leo praised Lucas for his hard work: "Training nine times a week is not an easy task. It requires immense determination and willpower. I know Lucas enjoys watching videos of Michael Phelps and Thomas Ceccon, which have inspired him not only in competition strategy but also in the steps towards his goals."

"This year, Lucas proactively planned his summer camp training with a stretch goal," Coach Leo continues, "and he had grown significantly in both strength and ability by the end of the summer. I can't wait to see what he achieves next."
