Original Post: January 3, 2017

The beginning of the Downtown Oakville transformation is about to begin, starting January 5, 2017.

The first major change will be the transitioning the one way streets to two way. The other major change will be the rebuilding of the Lakeshore Road bridge over the 16 Mile Creek.

On Thursday, January 5, 2017, Navy Street from Lakeshore Road East to Randall Street will become two way. The remainder of the plan is still detail design phase which should be completed by the end of 2017, and will identify all the necessary elements that will need to take place prior to implementing the conversion.

Implementation of the two-way conversion will include the following:

  1. New signage and pavement markings
  2. Modifications to existing traffic signals
  3. Implementation of commercial loading zones
  4. Intersection geometry improvements
  5. Introduction of dedicated cycling lanes

Closure of Lakeshore Road Bridge over 16 Mile Creek

The Lakeshore Road Bridge over Sixteen Mile Creek is scheduled to be reconstructed starting in late January 2017 and is expected to be completed by late fall 2017. As a result, the roadway will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for the duration of the project. A detour route around the bridge will be provided via Kerr Street, Rebecca Street and Navy Street.

Lakeshore Road will be closed from Navy Street to the east and Forsyth Street to the west. Design elements will be the same as those being incorporated into the Downtown Oakville Streetscape.

Work to the bridge will included the following:

  1. Removal and replacement of the existing concrete deck and steel girders
  2. Repairs to the existing piers and replacement of the bridge abutments
  3. Two travel lanes, a center turn lane and bikes lanes
  4. A wider pedestrian sidewalk with a barrier wall between the sidewalk and vehicular traffic
  5. New pedestrians railings
  6. Pedestrian lookouts will be incorporated into the bridge
  7. LED Street lighting on the bridge
