The town of Oakville's residents have always felt very strongly about taking a moment of time to remember those who have served to protect not only our country, but also our community. Here is what is happening for Remembrance 2017 in Oakville.
There are several major events for Remembrance 2017:
- Saturday, November 4, 2017, Lest We Forget: Musical Tribute which will take place at Glen Abbey United Church, located at 1469 Nottinghill Gate. It will feature the Welsh Male Chorus. This event will start at 7:30 PM.
- Sunday, November 5, 2017 the Annual Scout-Guide Remembrance Service will take place at Maple Grove United Church located at 346 Maple Grove in South East Oakville. All scouts will be wearing full uniform. The service is open to parents, relatives, visitors and all church members. This service will start at 8:45 AM.
- Sunday November 5, 2017 there is a Remembrance March from Bronte Legion which is located at Jones Street south of Lakeshore Road West and moves to the Cenotaph which is located at the Bronte Harbour entrance which is west of Bronte Road, and south of Lakeshore Road West. This event begins at 10:00 AM, with the formal service taking place at 11:00 AM. The Remembrance March includes a laying on of wreaths.
Saturday, November 11, 2017, Remembrance Day's formal services in Oakville will take place at:
- George's Square, Trafalgar Road and Palmer in Old Oakville has traditionally been the location of Oakville's main Remembrance Day service. Co-ordinated by the Oakville Legion 114 will include a march by the military (active & retired), Emergency Service Providers, Scouts, along with a full military band. The formal service begins at 11:00 AM and there is a laying on of wreaths.
- The most recent Remembrance Day service started a few years ago when members of the public gathered in Memorial Park at 120 Oak Park Drive along Hayes Blvd. This service provides members of the public in the northern section of town to take part in a formal Remembrance Day service. EMS will also be in attendance. The formal service begins at 11:00 AM.
Other ways to participate in Remembrance Day:
- At a 11:00 AM on November 11, 2017 take a minute and stop whatever you are doing to honour those who have stood up and continue to protect our country as well as our community.
- Purchase a poppy. By purchasing a poppy you contribute to the Legion Poppy Fund. The Legion provides financial assistance and support to Veterans, including Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, and their families who are in need.
Poppy Funds may be used for:
- Grants for food, heating costs, clothing, prescription medication, medical appliances and equipment, essential home repairs and emergency shelter or assistance for Veterans and their families in need
- Housing accommodation and care facilities for Veterans
- Funding for Veteran Transition Programs that are directly related to the training, education and support needs of Veterans and their families
- Comforts for Veterans and their surviving spouses who are hospitalized and in need
- Veterans visits, transportation, reading programs and day trips
- Accessibility modifications to assist Veterans with disabilities
- Educational bursaries for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Veterans
- Support of cadet units
- Community drop-in centres, meals-on-wheels, and seniors services in communities where Veterans would benefit
- Community medical appliances, medical training and medical research which will assist in the care of Veterans in the community
- Support the work of Legion Command and Branch Service Officers across Canada in assisting and representing Veterans
- Donations for relief of disasters declared by federal or provincial governments which impact Veteran in those communities
- Promotion and administering of Remembrance activities to ensure Canadians never forget the sacrifices of Canada’s Veterans
Remembrance 2017 gives you an opportunity to respect those who protect our liberties. For parents it gives them an opportunity to demonstrate to their children the importance of those great individuals.
