The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has issued a special warning to Oakville residents in response to what they call "an increase in break and enter occurrences" locally.

HRPS released a statement asking residents "to be aware and consider implementing safety measures after noting an increase in break and enter occurrences to Oakville homes that back onto green space and trail systems."

These break and enters have taken place during daytime and evening hours, but have peaked between the hours of 6-9 p.m.

Thieves typically enter through the rear door of the home and once inside will target cash, jewellery and luxury items. Occasionally, thieves have also utilized ladders to access second story windows and balconies.

HRPS is reminding residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious persons, vehicles or activity to police.

Tips to assist in mitigating risk and property loss can include:

  • Ensuring fenced yard access gates, residence doors and windows are locked and secured
  • Installation of shatter proof glass film, upgraded deadbolts and door reinforcement
  • Installation of home security systems, audible alarms
  • Installation of motion lighting to ensure your property is well lit
  • Trim hedges and greenery to allow for clear sight lines
  • Ensure ladders are stored in a secure location
  • Inform your neighbours if you’ll be away
  • Secure your valuables in a safe or secure location

Further tips and suggestions can be found on our website. Anyone who may have knowledge or information on residential break and enters occurring within Oakville is asked to contact the 2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2216.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or through the web at www.haltoncrimestoppers.ca.
