Solar Eclipse Oakville June 2021 - watching from pier
Solar Eclipse Oakville

Are you ready for today's total solar eclipse? This once in a lifetime event requires a bit of preparation and safety planning - here's everything you need to know before the eclipse this afternoon.

The eclipse will last for 2 hours and 27 minutes. The partial eclipse will begin at 2:04 p.m., when the edges of the moon and sun meet.

At 3:19 p.m., totality begins as the moon's edge covers the sun completely, which will only last a few seconds here in Oakville.

Totality will end at 3:19 p.m., and the partial eclipse will end at 4:31 p.m.

Due to the path of totality, the best viewing spots in town are going to be by the lake, which makes the following locations ideal options:

  • Coronation Park
  • Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park
  • Tannery Park
  • Lakeside Park
  • South Shell Park

Remember not to look directly at the Sun during the eclipse, whether through a camera, telescope, or naked eye.

If you plan on viewing, it's important to use specialized glasses equipped with certified eclipse filters to protect your vision.

Any solar viewing glasses you purchase should meet safety standards such as the ISO 12312-2 international standard.

Ordinary sunglasses do not provide adequate protection for the eclipse.

More updates to come throughout the day.
