Oakville News received the following letter about the rat population in Oakville and the lack of maintenance of rat traps around the city:

It's not surprising that Oakville has been named one of the rattiest towns in Ontario. There are many of the black rat trap boxes in Oakville outside businesses, convenience stores as well as restaurants and I believe in the vicinity of our hospital.

No effort appears to have been made to keep them clean and replace them when they no longer serve their purpose. Bad placements and debris in some instances surrounds and blocks the point of entry for the rodents.

I was given to understand that whomsoever supplies these black boxes is responsible for their maintenance and replacement if necessary. This obviously does not happen. Perhaps if these black boxes were checked and cleaned up regularly and the business operators informed of their responsibilities some of the rat problems could be solved.

The Halton Health Department should be involved in ensuring the rat traps are kept in a good and useful state

Yours truly,

Pauline Ponedel
